So, spring has come and the snow has melted from your yard. It means that you survived yet another bitter Northeast Ohio winter. For the first time in almost six months, you’ll be able to see the grass on your lawn and enjoy some sunshine! However, it also means that you should begin thinking about the landscaping around your house. The best landscape begins with good mulch and the type you get should be based on what you specifically want for your yard. For example, some mulch is designed to make your house look more aesthetically pleasing, like our Sagamore Silk, which keeps its color all year long. We also have mulch that specifically delivers nutrients to your plants to keep them as vibrant and healthy as possible, like out Sweet Peet Mulch and our Sagamore Envy. Once you’ve decided on what mulch you want, you need to figure out how much mulch you should buy.
Calculating the amount of mulch you need for your yard can be a difficult task, especially if you aren’t positive of the correct depth of mulch or the unit of measurement to use when purchasing mulch. Here is a guide to help you figure out how much mulch you need:
- Mulch is typically measured in cubic yards, so the first step is to measure the area where you plan on putting the mulch in feet. First measure the length, then the width, and multiply these two figures together to get squared feet.
- The depth of mulch can make or break whether or not your garden is successful. If you layer it too thin, your plants will freeze in a late frost; too thick, they will suffocate and not have access to water. Generally, two to three inches is a good depth for your mulch.
- Multiply the squared feet figure in step one by the depth that you decide on in step two, and you will have your measurement in cubic feet. Then, you should divide that number by 324, and the result is your total cubic yardage. Now, you’ll have a figure to tell your landscaping company.
When you have your final figure to tell the landscaping company, you are all but ready to begin your landscaping process.
